Salvation is All or Nothing
The other day as I was studying God interrupted my thoughts. I was quite surprised because He was complaining to me about those who have not made a full commitment to Him. "You have to warn them!" He told me, "They think they are going to Heaven because they have given over a little sliver of their hearts to Me while holding on to their pet sins. They will be weeping and gnashing their teeth on judgment day because they never made a full commitment to Me! "
Frankly, I was really stunned, because although we talk every day this was the first time I felt His heart on a matter so strongly since last year when I wrote "This Matter of Sin". I could really feel His frustration with these people coming through.
know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold
or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will
spue thee out of my mouth.
I've written about this before in "Salvation: The Free Gift That Costs Everything" and shared my life changing event in "What Price Salvation" but He clearly isn't finished with this topic yet. When we make a full commitment to God it is a life changing event, even if it is not obvious at the time.
Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more
than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power
thereof: from such turn away.
Most people read 2 Timothy 3:1-9 (KJV) never realizing this passage is speaking about Christians! They are looking back at this world just as Lot's wife did and will pay the awful price for it. Their hearts are still enchanted with the things of this world; they may have made a profession of Christ but their hearts they have never changed. They are living in compromise with the world and Satan. They may go to church on Sunday and read their bibles but allow God only a small piece of their lives.
And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make
clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full
of ravening and wickedness.
To give our lives to Christ used to actually mean something, but today things are different. There are people who call themselves by His Name but refuse to give up the world; they refuse to sacrifice anything! The churches must carry much of the blame here; with few exceptions they are not preaching messages of conviction of sin. But ultimately it is our personal relationship with Christ that has never properly developed and for that we will all be personally accountable to Him on judgment day.
And these are they which are sown among thorns; such
as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of
riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it
Let me be clear; we do not 'arrive' by any means on the day we make that complete commitment to Him. Anyone who tells you that they did or that they are no longer sinners is a liar. Sin will always be a struggle for us as long as we inhabit these bodies. God deals with our sins over a lifetime, I can't tell you how many times in my life I've thought I am getting pretty clean now and then God shows me a whole area of my life that really needs work. It is so frustrating to deal with sin, but a lifetime necessity.
Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my
The difference is that we have made a full commitment to Him and meant it. He sees our hearts; He knows if we intend to give up that sinful relationship, bad habit or whatever it is that may hold us back. It is only those of us who are willing to surrender all that receive the precious gift of salvation. Jesus shed His blood and gave His life for us; is whatever you are holding onto in this world more precious than that? Christ is pleading with you; give it up now while there is still time!
