Hearing from God
I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear,
that preach ye upon the housetops.
Recently I had a discussion with a rather obstinate man who called himself a Christian. What raised his ire was the fact that I dared claim that God spoke to me. He labeled me a false prophet and quickly blocked me on Facebook.
And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.
And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him,
though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily.
Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
I have to ask, are today’s Christians so ignorant of scripture and faithless that they cannot even fathom God speaking to His children? How can you claim to be a Christian but never have had any two-way communications with God? We must seek His face until this matter is resolved! It seems to me this reflects more upon their own faithlessness than anything else.
Half of my communication with God is me begging His pardon for transgressing His Law. I’m not talking about the oral or Mosaic Laws, scripture is clear that we are dead to those laws. It is the Law that was written in my heart by the infilling of the Holy Spirit. God has been speaking to me all of my life, and I know He speaks to many others as well. But in my case, it took me 32 years on this earth until I recognized that I was being spoken to by Him.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not
of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Scripture tells us that we are all given a certain measure of faith (Ephesians 2:8 KJV) when we become servants of God. Indeed, in the parable of the talents of Matthew 25 the talents represent the different measures of faith that each Christian is given, according to their ability. Don’t forget that the unprofitable servant is cast into the outer darkness, which is Hell. Having the gift of faith without any works and calling yourself a Christian is like being gifted a car that you never drive and calling yourself a race car driver.
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after
the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty
through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations,
and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and
bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Tragically, many people very easily dismiss the voice of God speaking to them as the words and thoughts of their own conscience. But as we begin to walk in obedience and bring every thought captive we can discern a pattern of what we recognize as very good thoughts, without realizing that they were in fact dropped into our minds by the Holy Spirit.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove
your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in
you, except ye be reprobates?
Examining our thoughts is very profitable spiritually speaking. Bringing these thoughts into captivity is simply ‘tagging’ them. Is this thought pleasing to God? Is it a thought of temptation from the Wicked one? Is this the Holy Spirit trying to minister to me, or warn me about something? Once you train yourself to examine every thought you will quickly find that it is rather easy to discern from whence they came. The Spirit gives us spiritual discernment.
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being
alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy
faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou
believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe,
and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is
I cannot tell you the amount of times I have gotten a word of knowledge from the Holy Spirit that I not only recognized as such, but acted upon. You see, once we know we have heard from the Spirit we must act in accordance. It is a step of faith. This is the precise meaning of the phrase ‘faith without works is dead’ in scripture. When we truly believe, we must act upon that belief. This point is relentlessly driven home in Hebrews 11 where we are given over a dozen real world examples of the simple spiritual formula:
using FAITH (SOME ACTION)
And when we do this, the Holy Spirit has a way of affirming that we did indeed hear from Him. It may be that He sends someone to tell us the exact same thing, or perhaps we read an article about it. Just a few weeks ago I sensed that God was telling me some of my medical issues were due to one of my medications needing adjusting. So, BY FAITH I called my doctor and asked him to change my dosage. Within 48 hours I was feeling so much better and stronger. Glory to God!
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye
have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the
oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong
meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of
righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are
of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to
discern both good and evil.
Now occasionally we may get something wrong, where we thought we heard from God but it wasn’t really Him. But you must understand that God judges only by the intention our hearts. There is also a certain period of learning to recognize His voice; it is a spiritual skill that we develop through constant use. I (and more importantly God) want you all to be on the strong meat, which means to be able to digest deep spiritual truths.
But the churches these days are passing out spiritual ‘happy meals’ that are easy to digest and lacking in essential vitamins, minerals and protein. Indeed, they are bottle feeding perpetual spiritual babies who never learn to digest the Word for themselves. Every spiritual truth they think they know is because it was regurgitated by their pastor. They never experienced the thrill of digging through the Word of God for answers for themselves.
This type of sheep is the favorite of the Laodicean church, spiritually anemic, always on the verge of spiritual starvation. Totally depending on the pastor and church for their spiritual growth. They keep them hooked like junkies. They also cut the gospel with leaven like a dealer would his drugs. Don’t you see? Just like in Jesus’ day the Pharisees and Sadducees are running the churches!
How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it
not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the
Pharisees and of the Sadducees? Then understood they how that he bade them
not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and
of the Sadducees.
Want to make these wolves posing as sheep really squirm? Start quoting scripture to people that contradicts the lies they are spreading from their pulpits! You will think to yourself that your pastor is a man of God, surely he will be glad I showed him the error he is in. HA! You will soon discover that it is the Jezebel spirit that rules these churches! They will threaten you, and lie about you to others. And if you refuse to yield to their doctrines of devils they will kick you out to the street and label you a heretic!
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and
sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of
soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the
thoughts and intents of the heart.
Yes, hearing God’s voice and recognizing it as such is a complete game changer for a Christian! As we begin to recognize and heed the Spirit we will make all sorts of enemies in our churches and even families. And once you ‘know that you know’ that you are hearing from God nothing can persuade you otherwise. His Spirit emboldens us. When you hear from the Spirit and speak these words to others in faith don’t be surprised that you will come against fierce demonic attack.
You must understand that the Jezebel spirit is driven into a frenzy when she is forced to hear words of truth. This is the same spirit that caused her to murder the prophets of the Lord, Herodias to demand the head of John the Baptist and ultimately the Pharisees to crucify our Lord. You will pay a price for it. And when that happens you will get your confirmation that you heard from the Spirit, because the reaction to your Word from the Lord will be utterly ungodly.
Sadly, many young pastors who were once on fire for God have rendered impotent spiritually speaking by marrying Jezebel wives. Oh, Satan sends Jezebels after all the pastors he sees as a threat. These women are skilled at faking a Christian walk, they know just what to say. And the men get taken in by their physical attributes, just as Sampson did with Delilah, who was a Jezebel archetype. I can say with absolute empirical proof that some of these women are outright witches! Read my article series on Jezebel for more examples.
We must be willing to put the things that drown His still small voice out like worldly music, TV, and movies out of our lives if we want to hear from the Spirit. We must set aside quiet time with the Lord every day. Do you automatically turn on music in your car or on public transportation? Stop doing that. Driving is a great time to talk to God, and more important to hear back from Him. People cannot seem to hear anyone else these days because they constantly have ear buds in their ears. Spiritually speaking, those ear buds have to be removed and we must be prepared to hear from God. Ask God questions; ask Him what does this verse mean or that. Ask Him what His will is for your life. And be prepared to hear back.
Hearing from God is not some special skill for Christians, but an absolutely essential part of the salvation experience. Every one of us should be hearing from Him on a daily basis. There must be two-way communication! The fact that this is the exception rather than the rules reflects on the current state of the body of Christ, not God. He is constantly searching the earth with His eyes looking for those who want the truth and are willing to pay the price for it. The ‘Heavenly gift’ (Hebrews 6:4-6 KJV) is available to all of God’s children. As a matter of fact, those who don’t hear from or speak to God risk hearing those four words that cause me to shake with fear:
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we
not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy
name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never
knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
If you do not hear from God there is something very wrong with your salvation. He cannot ever say to us “I never knew you” if we are having constant daily two-way communications. We don’t hear a choir of angels singing, or organ music, but just a still, small voice. We train ourselves to hear His voice by first reducing the volume of all the other noisy distractions, and secondly examining every thought that enters our minds. Once we resolve in our hearts and minds to hear His voice God will become much more real to us and our faith grows by leaps and bounds! Glory to God!
