Predestination is Not Evidence of Salvation

IMGLay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
Matthew 6:19-20 (KJV)

My heart is aching today for those who foolishly have invested everything they have into this life, instead of the hereafter. In particular I want to talk about the Calvinist's idea of predestination as opposed to scripture's. A salvation based upon the concept of predestination is based upon circular reasoning, a logical fallacy. It goes like this: "I'm saved because I believe, I believe because I'm saved!" But scripture plainly tells us that faith without works is dead (James 2:17,20,26 KJV)!

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Matthew 7:21-23 (KJV)

So many misconstrue the above verse and never give it a second thought. 'Jesus could never say this to me' they reason to themselves. It always seems to apply to someone else, never to us. After all, how could Jesus claim to have never known us when scripture says He knew us from when we were formed in the belly (Jeremiah 1:5 KJV) and even from before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4-5 KJV)?

You see, believing ourselves to have been predestined to salvation does not save us. This is the error of Calvinism, that we are saved and there's nothing we can do about it one way or another. Under this heresy all one must do to be saved is come to realize and believe that they are predestined. It is very seductive because it takes elements of the truth and twists them. For example it is salvation by faith only, but unfortunately the wrong kind of faith.

Of course our works do not save us, however they are the substance of our salvation, without them our faith is dead. Even Jesus Christ Himself pointed to His works as evidence of who He was (John 5:36 KJV). Calvinism is not a works based faith, which is good, however it goes beyond that as to having no discernible evidence. A life lived unchanged by the power of salvation is not salvation at all!

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
John 14:12 (KJV)

According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Ephesians 1:4-5 (KJV)

Many have difficulty wrapping their heads around the subject of predestination. Believing that we have been predestined is comforting and true as long as our salvation is not in any way based upon it. You see, we must still repent, which includes actively turning from all sin in our lives. Repenting is the number one 'work' of our salvation. It is a daily, and sometimes even hourly part of our walk with Christ.

And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
Luke 15:23-24 (KJV)

Have you ever seen those pages long notices published in the newspaper? They are filled with the countless names of people who have forgotten money in an account. Perhaps some accounts have even gained a lot of interest. But contrary to the manner in which many live their lives salvation is not like that. Remember the story of the prodigal son? When he abandoned his Father's house he was considered dead by Him.
