The Snake That Giveth Knowledge

IMGAnd these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Mark 16:17-18 (KJV)

There was a period of time a while back where I was often having dreams about snakes. In all of them I was doing serious bodily harm to them; stomping on them, ripping them apart and so on. Pretty gross actually, but I’ll leave the symbolism for you to interpret, because what I want to discuss is my most recent dream.

“I am the Snake that giveth knowledge & delight and bright glory, and stir the hearts of men with drunkenness. To worship me take wine and strange drugs whereof I will tell my prophet, & be drunk thereof! They shall not harm ye at all. It is a lie, this folly against self. The exposure of innocence is a lie. Be strong, o man! lust, enjoy all things of sense and rapture: fear not that any God shall deny thee for this. I am alone: there is no God where I am.”
Aleister Crowley - Liber al vel Legis 2:22-23

In this most recent dream, I was in a car with my father when we came upon a whole nest of snakes in the middle of the road. We stopped for a moment, trying to decide what to do. We came to the conclusion that our best course of action was to try and run over these snakes to get by them. As we came upon this brood of vipers I noticed that my car window was open. There wasn’t enough time to close it, and as we passed over them a single snake managed to fly in. As I pondered this dream I recalled that the snakes were completely black, save for one bright yellow stripe going lengthwise.

I pondered the dream for a while, and it occurred to me that the coloring of the snakes was significant. I asked God to show me the meaning and was quickly reminded of when I had seen that color combination before. It was back in the 1990s when the building I ran in Manhattan was wired with fiber optic cable. The cable that Roadrunner used was single conductor shielded with a black insulation and had a prominent yellow stripe along its length.

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
2 Corinthians 11:14 (KJV)

Now, fiber optic cable as you probably know uses light to move data around the planet. As you would expect, this data is moved at the speed of light. The mediums of film and television both rely on the projection of light to present us with imagery. In addition, berore his fall Satan was called Lucifer which means 'bringer of light'. The 'Luc' part of Lucifer is where we get words like lucent and lucidity. Another way that information is moved is through the airwaves. Radio, television, and later cellular, WIFI and Bluetooth all utilize the airwaves. Broadcasts are often referred to as being “on the air”. Ephesians 2:2 (KJV) tells us that in addition to appearing as an angel of light, Satan holds the title of the "prince of the power of the air".

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Isaiah 14:12-14 (KJV)

One of the ways that Satan describes himself is as the snake that giveth knowledge. He likes to portray himself as a benefactor of man, because he offers us knowledge that God withholds from us. In the role of Prometheus, Satan poses as one who has stolen knowledge from the gods in the form of fire and offered it to mankind. As we see in the above passage, Satan claims that he will be like the Most High. But he is not, and will never be! He is not omniscient (all knowing), nor is he all seeing, although he claims to have the all-seeing eye. Our God who is omnipresent is the only God that is all seeing!

But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
Daniel 12:4 (KJV)

Now as time has marched on from Daniel’s days, knowledge has been steadily increasing. With inventions like the Gutenberg press, then subsequently radio and television, we have seen tremendous leaps in the knowledge available to mankind. But no leap has been as big as the invention of the internet. Literally we hold all of the world’s knowledge in our pockets! These fiber optic light snakes that give knowledge encircle the globe. Additionally, all of our wireless knowledge comes to us courtesy of the prince of the power of the air.

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Genesis 3:4-6 (KJV)

As I ponder these things, a sad truth emerges. For if we are truthful with ourselves, we must admit that in our own way, like Satan, Adam and Eve before us, we also lust for that same omniscient knowledge God has. And for his part Satan is more than happy to provide his form of it to us. We just cannot wait to get back on the internet every day when we wake up, to suck up yet more useless knowledge. But it is knowledge for its own sake. The fact that it is never enough betrays the truth that it is an unhealthy appetite. It is a hunger that is never satisfied, like sex, drugs or anything else that Satan offers mankind.

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
2 Timothy 3:1-4 (KJV)

Many who are lovers of themselves express their narcissism by sharing the most trivial details of their lives with the world on a moment to moment basis. It should come as no surprise then that as a result the pleasure centers of their brains are most active when they talk about themselves. Like drug addicts, they have become chemically addicted to the dopamine reward they get with every like on Facebook, Twitter etc. Satan has also turned many of us into angels of light, but like him the light we cast is also artificial, and false. We cast our false light with these miniature TV stations we carry in our pockets. We see it every day on social media when we falsely portray ourselves in photos and videos. We appear smiling when we are actually miserable inside. We portray our lives as idyllic, when in reality they are far from it. Indeed, many of us believe that “Perception is reality”, but it is not.
